Tired Little Bee, or how Food Network gets me by.

As much as it would irritate me when people would say to, "Get your rest now!" when I was 9 months pregnant... I'm willing to agree a little. Just a little, because 9 months pregnant is still not ideal for a restful sleep, and I still won't be telling anyone that's 9 months pregnant to do the same. Because it's just damn irritating. But man, I'd love some sleep sans-kid. As precious as he is.

In the wee hours of the night/morning when the babe wants to be fed is when I watch a lot of Food Network. Food Network is one of the few channels that has programming late so I end up there a lot, despite some shows that make me want to throw things.

  • Guy Fieri. What's the appeal? I think this dude would annoy me even if R and I didn't catch the whole season of Next Food Network Star that unearthed him from obscurity and foisted his "celebrity" onto an unsuspecting public. I.just.don't.get.it. The shirts, the shorts, the sunglasses, the hair, the beard. All of it. I will admit that Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives is interesting but only due to the fact I may actually end up at one of the places - and that excites me. It'd be one of those things where I coerce R into going BECAUSE IT WAS ON TV and drag him along, protesting the whole way. Much like our trek to Magnolia Bakery. Did I ever tell you about that? Remind me to tell you about that.
  • But for now let's move onto... The Best Thing I Ever Ate. I enjoy this show, I do. But I'd like it a whole lot more if the chefs chose more selections outside of NYC. They do, sometimes, but the majority are within the confines of the city. I do love New York, R was born there for crying out loud (despite what CL's birth certificate says - sigh) but without more choices that I actually have a chance of trying, it gets a bit like window shopping and I HATE window shopping. My whole point in watching the Food Network is to make believe I'll eat it one day, otherwise, it's just pointless. Drooling over food you can't ever have - WTF! Torturous!
  • I used to love Tyler Florence, but after following him on Twitter for a spell, I'm now convinced he's a pompous asshole.
  • Which is just as well because I only have room for one FN crush and Tyler has been supplanted by Aarón Sanchez. From watching Chopped, I used to think Aarón was a pompous ass, too. What is it with FN? The personalities either have to be annoying chipper jackasses (Guy, Giada*, Sandra Lee) or way too full of themselves (most judges on Iron Chef or Chopped). But Aarón has become decidely more human to me with the show Chefs Vs. City. The way he choked down that octopus on the L.A. episode gave me whole new respect for the man, and will forever be etched in my memory as some entertaining television. (We won't talk about how disappointed I was by the Portland episode, alas.)
  • Is anyone else as underwhelmed by this season's Next Food Network Star as I am? I wouldn't watch a show featuring any of these jackholes. All of them are boring and none of them can cook as far as I can tell. Does anyone else get confused when they freeze up on camera when the whole time leading up to being on camera, they're on camera? And while I appreciate Herb's painful upbringing, I don't care to hear about it on a cooking show. I watch Real Housewives for character development, by god.
  • If you are obsessed with Food Network as I am, you need to read Food Network Humor, NEED. Highly entertaining stuff right there.

Well the babe has been sleeping the whole time I've typed this so I could have either a) slept myself b) finished packing for San Diego c) slept myself. So off I go.

*My dad would kill me if he knew I said that about Giada - KILL ME. So let's keep it between us.

In all honesty I'm more of an Andrew Zimmern/Anthony Bourdain fan.

However Guy, Glada and cooks of the like annoy me too. Still haven't caught Chopped :(

OMG, I cannot stand Guy Fieri OR Giada De Laurentiis...they both make me want to simultabeously vomit & break my very expensive TV! And have you ever seen Giada's MAN HANDS? She makes Emeril's sausage fingers look tiny! I am SO serious. Next time your girl G is on, check out how big her extremties are given her petite size...you will get a good laugh.

BTW, so glad you're back to blogging! :)

I heart Giada and Ina, but I can just hear Mother saying about Guy Fee-ay-ee: "Ugh, that man looks like he lives on cocaine and cigarettes!!!"

Oh I remember those nights. I have to give a shout out to Slim Fast shakes, coffee, and VH1's Insomniac Theater for getting me through.
I only tune into the Food Network at the gym of all places. For some reason they insist on putting on the Food Network, CNN News, Court TV and other things that either raise my blood pressure or make me hungry.
Interesting read here though and makes me want to check out the Food Network more often. Oh and not follow the pompous asshole on twitter. :)

Sass: I hate her smile. And you know she's a huge bitch so it's all fake and put on for the cameras. You ever catch her evil glances on Next Food Network Star? I do. No comment on Guy. lol j/k

Char: Oh you mean real chefs? LOL I do think Food Network can be more toward the celebrity and less on the cooking. I do love Bourdain, I am watching No Reservations in Hawaii as I type. Have you read Kitchen Confidential? I love him. Truly.

Rei: You best be in the passenger seat or at a stop! LOL Driving while reading my silly blog is not worth an accident. ;D I haven't caught her man hands, mostly since I turn her off as soon as she's on but I LOVE a good pair of man hands, they make me laugh. My dad loves her, loves her. I can just hear him: Giadaaaaaaaaaaa. Hilarious.

Nancy: I'm sure there are people that don't understand my affinity for Aarón so we'll call a truce. The heart wants what the heart wants! lmao!

J: I know all about you and your love for Ina. She can cook, though, and she makes things look really easy. Not only that but her voice puts me right to sleep! Wait, that's probably not a good thing! lol @ Cocaine and cigs... that sounds like Bourdain circa 1986.

Suzanne: Okay first, I miss VH1 Insomniac Theater! I was a regular viewer myself, I wish they'd bring that back AND Pop Up Video! Second, I have to laugh they show Food Network at the gym, of all places. That reminds me of a time I brought a cooking magazine to read on the treadmill. Talk about counterproductive!

Oh and J, they put that R was born in Oregon on CL's birth certificate. Smooth move. I know we didn't put that on the form. *eye roll*

I find Giada's freakishly huge smile a bit painful to look at, but I do actually like her food. In fact, I have all of her cookbooks. I also really like Ina and her chubby gracious self.

I think Guy might be from around my area...I do not get the appeal. At. All. And, I really REALLY hate his hair a lot. I don't watch FN very much, be he was on my local news being interviewed not too long ago and it was a horrible way to start my day. The dumbass news anchor interviewing him didn't help matters going on about how "cool" Guy is. Barf.

So glad you are blogging again.

I cant believe Anne Burrell didn't make your list! She bugs the hell out of me!

And Guy... he is the worst!

July 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStacy

EC: My brother loves him some Ina, and my dad loves his Giada. You can't say anything to either one of them about their girls or they get all upset. hahahaha I told my dad Giada had a lollipop head and he said: That's not very nice. Guy believes his own coolness, that's the sad thing.

Stacy: Thank you, my love! Anne did bug me from the Worst Cooks show because she was so bitchy but FN humor has pointed out she does seem to have a sense of humor about herself, and her Twitter is funny and human... so she sorta went up a few notches for me. Although when she says her shooting match line on her show, I want to shoot something alright - my freaking TV!

July 3, 2010 | Registered CommenterMary

Have you seen the Cooking Channel yet? I am totally obsessed :)

July 3, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDulamae

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Giada. lovelovelovelovelovelove.
I dont even like to cook. but i love giada.

July 6, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterslackjaw

Dulamae: I saw your tweet about it and I'm glad to hear there are alternatives to some of these stupid FN shows. The other day I saw a cake challenge for Simpsons characters. WHO.CARES?? I'll definitely check it out. As soon as I can pry the remote from R.

Slackjaw: That's because you're a dude, and dudes love Giada!! I want to know how she stays so damn skinny while eating so much pasta. Yes, I'm hating. Hate hate hate. :D
